What Is a Tanged Metal Reinforced Graphite Gasket?

A tanged metal reinforced graphite gasket (also called a tanged stainless steel reinforced graphite gasket, or simply a tanged graphite gasket) is a high-temperature sealing element built from two layers of 98% pure exfoliated graphite pressed onto both faces of a 0.1 mm tanged stainless steel sheet. The metal core carries a pattern of small punched "tangs" — raised hooks that mechanically anchor the graphite to the steel. Because the graphite is bonded by mechanical interlock rather than adhesive, the gasket will not delaminate under thermal cycling, pressure spikes or flange shear.

The result is a gasket that combines the chemical inertness and temperature resistance of pure graphite with the tensile strength and blow-out resistance of stainless steel. That combination is why tanged graphite gaskets are the default choice for refinery, petrochemical, power generation and steam distribution flanges that see wide temperature swings.

Kaxite manufactures this gasket in three construction variants to match your flange and media:

  • Standard tanged graphite gasket — the base construction, used for most ASME B16.21 and DIN 2690 flanges.
  • Tanged graphite gasket with eyelets — stainless steel eyelets (rings) formed around the inner and outer edges. Recommended for high-pressure, high-shear or thin-flange service to prevent graphite edge erosion.
  • Tanged graphite gasket with stainless steel insert (SS316L / SS304) — full metal insert for critical high-pressure steam and hydrogen service.

If you are sealing a low-temperature water line, a compressed non-asbestos sheet is cheaper. If you are sealing 400°C steam at 40 bar with 30 cycles a year, the tanged graphite gasket is the correct answer.

Key Features & Performance Advantages

  • No Adhesives, No DelaminationGraphite is mechanically locked to the tanged steel core. The gasket will not separate even after hundreds of thermal cycles.
  • Extreme Temperature RangeContinuous service from -240°C to +550°C in oxidizing atmospheres, and up to +650°C in inert or reducing atmospheres.
  • Near-Universal Chemical ResistancepH 0–14. Compatible with steam, hydrocarbon, hydrogen, acid, alkali and most solvents — except strong oxidizers like fuming nitric acid.
  • High Pressure CapabilityUp to 200 bar (20 MPa / 2900 psi) with proper bolt load. The tanged core prevents blow-out under pressure spikes.
  • Excellent Creep ResistanceLow permanent set keeps bolt load stable through thermal cycling — fewer re-torques, fewer leaks.
  • Anti-Blowout ConstructionThe stainless steel core acts as a structural reinforcement that holds the gasket together if the graphite face is damaged.
  • Low Bolt Load RequiredCompressibility of 15–35% means the gasket seats with moderate bolt torque, protecting fragile or aging flanges.
  • Custom Shapes & EyeletsRound, oval, rectangular, non-standard bore and any eyelet configuration to match your flange drawing.

Construction & Material Selection

The performance of a tanged graphite gasket depends on three variables: graphite purity, core material and construction type. Use the table below to select the right grade for your application.

Table 1 — Construction and material options
Component Standard Optional Upgrade Typical Use
Graphite face 98% pure exfoliated graphite, density 1.0 g/cm³ 99% pure, low-sulfur grade Standard industrial sealing
Metal core Tanged SS304 (0.1 mm) Tanged SS316L, SS321, Monel SS316L for corrosive / marine
Edge protection None (bare graphite edge) SS304 / SS316L eyelets Eyelets for high-pressure and thin flanges
Insert style Tanged core only Solid SS316L insert Critical high-pressure steam / H₂
Surface finish Natural graphite matte Anti-stick coating on request Easy release from flange faces
Buyer's note: Tanged graphite gaskets contain a stainless steel core. If your application is a highly corrosive wet acid line or a strong oxidizer service, the metal core may corrode even though the graphite is inert. In those cases, specify a pure expanded graphite gasket or a PTFE-based gasket instead.

Tanged Graphite vs. Other High-Temperature Gasket Types

Choosing between the main high-temperature gasket families is the most common decision our customers face. The table below compares them on the properties that drive real-world performance.

Table 4 — Comparison of high-temperature gasket types
Property Tanged Graphite Pure Graphite Spiral Wound Kammprofile
Temperature max. +550°C (air) / +650°C (inert) +500°C (air) / +650°C (inert) +500°C (graphite filler) +550°C (graphite facing)
Pressure max. 200 bar 100 bar 250 bar 250 bar
Blow-out resistance High (tanged core) Low Very high Very high
Handling strength High Low (fragile) Medium High
Bolt load required Medium Low High High
Reusability Limited No No Facing can be replaced
Best for Steam, hydrocarbon, refinery flanges Low-pressure, fragile flanges High-pressure ASME flanges Heat exchangers, high-pressure
Engineering note: For flange joints above Class 900 or above 250 bar, a spiral wound or kammprofile gasket is usually the better choice. Tanged graphite gaskets perform best in the 10–200 bar range where their combination of strength and low bolt load is a real advantage.

Installation Guidelines

A tanged graphite gasket is a precision component — installation errors account for the majority of field failures. Follow the rules below and you will get a leak-free joint the first time:

  • Flange surface finish — Ra 3.2–12.5 µm is ideal. Excessive roughness (over Ra 12.5 µm) can tear the graphite face.
  • Flange flatness — should be within 0.2 mm across the full face; check for distortion on old or repeatedly torqued flanges.
  • Bolt load — follow the bolt torque values in ASME PCC-1 or your flange supplier's data sheet. Do not exceed the gasket's compression limit of 35%.
  • Tightening pattern — use a star or cross pattern. Torque in 3–4 passes, reaching full torque on the final pass.
  • Do not reuse — tanged graphite gaskets are single-use. Always install a fresh gasket after any flange break.
  • Eyelets — if your gasket has eyelets, verify they sit cleanly inside the bolt circle before tightening, and check the gasket is centered on the flange face.

Applications

Kaxite tanged metal reinforced graphite gaskets are specified in equipment exposed to steam, hydrocarbons, hydrogen and aggressive chemicals at high temperature:

  1. Refinery & PetrochemicalDistillation columns, heat exchangers, reactor flanges, hydrocarbon pipelines.
  2. Power GenerationSteam headers, turbine flanges, boiler manways, feedwater systems.
  3. Chemical ProcessingReactors, columns, acid and alkali transfer lines, solvent recovery.
  4. Hydrogen & SyngasReformer flanges, H₂ delivery lines, shift reactor piping.
  5. Steam DistributionMain steam lines, traps, reducing stations, superheat headers.
  6. Pulp & PaperDigester flanges, black liquor lines, recovery boiler connections.
  7. Marine & OffshoreExhaust gas lines, engine manifolds, steam service on vessels.
  8. General OEM EquipmentAny high-temperature flange where a compressed sheet would fail.

Quality Assurance & Material Traceability

For B2B buyers, a gasket failure on a live flange is far more expensive than the gasket itself. Kaxite's quality control process is designed to prevent that:

  1. Incoming material control — graphite purity and stainless steel core grade are verified against the supplier certificate before production.
  2. Batch traceability — every shipment can be traced back to the graphite batch, steel coil and operator.
  3. In-house cutting & eyelet forming — die-cutting and eyelet forming performed in our own facility, not outsourced.
  4. Dimensional inspection — inner diameter, outer diameter, bolt circle, thickness and eyelet position checked against ASME B16.21 / DIN 2690 tolerances.
  5. Physical property testing — density, compressibility, recovery and ash content tested per ASTM F36A on every batch.
  6. Pre-shipment sampling — AQL-based random inspection with an inspection report supplied with the goods.
  7. Third-party testing on request — DIN 3535-6 leakage, ASTM F36A compressibility and independent lab certification can be arranged.

We operate an ISO 9001 quality management system and have supplied sealing components to customers in more than 60 countries, including OEM and MRO distributors across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tanged metal reinforced graphite gasket?

A tanged metal reinforced graphite gasket is a high-temperature sealing element made from two layers of 98% pure exfoliated graphite pressed onto a 0.1 mm tanged stainless steel core. The metal core has a pattern of small punched hooks ("tangs") that mechanically lock the graphite to the steel — no adhesives are used, so the gasket will not delaminate under thermal cycling.

What temperature and pressure can this gasket handle?

The standard grade is rated for continuous service from -240°C to +550°C in oxidizing atmospheres, and up to +650°C in inert or reducing atmospheres. Pressure rating is up to 200 bar (20 MPa / 2900 psi) when installed with the correct bolt load.

When should I use a tanged graphite gasket instead of a spiral wound gasket?

Choose tanged graphite when the flange operates in the 10–200 bar range with wide thermal cycling, when bolt load is limited by an aging or fragile flange, or when the media is a high-temperature hydrocarbon, steam or hydrogen. Choose spiral wound when pressure exceeds 250 bar or when ASME Class 900 and above flanges require the higher mechanical strength of a fully metallic gasket.

Do you supply the gasket with eyelets?

Yes. Eyelets (stainless steel rings formed around the inner and outer edges) are available in SS304 or SS316L. Eyelets are recommended for high-pressure service, thin flanges and any application where the graphite edge could otherwise erode or shear.

Can you manufacture non-standard sizes?

Yes. Because tanged graphite gaskets are cut from sheet, we can produce any size, bore, bolt-hole pattern and shape directly from your flange drawing — including non-circular, offset-bore and one-off sizes — with no tooling charge for small runs.

How does Kaxite control gasket quality?

We verify incoming graphite purity and stainless steel grade against supplier certificates, keep full batch traceability, cut and form eyelets in-house, inspect dimensions against ASME B16.21 and DIN 2690, test density, compressibility, recovery and ash content per ASTM F36A on every batch, and carry out AQL-based pre-shipment sampling with an inspection report supplied with the goods.

Do you support OEM and private-label packaging?

Yes. We offer custom labels, part-number marking, QR traceability codes, poly-bagging by size and full private-label packaging with your brand. MOQ for private-label packaging starts at 50 pcs per size.
